Crop Video

Choose a video and a frame out of it appears with a box on top. Drag the box around the part you want to keep — the pixel size of the result sits under the picture the whole time, so you can stop at 1080 × 1080 without doing the arithmetic yourself. Cropping changes every pixel of every frame, so the video has to be encoded again; for an MP4 that is done by the browser's own encoder, and a 30-second 720p clip took 1.2 seconds on the machine we tested on. The page counts the percentage out instead of leaving you watching a spinner.

    Where your file goes

    Nowhere. This page downloads a small program into your browser, and that program reads the file straight from your disk. The program comes from this site like any image or stylesheet — but your file only ever travels from your disk into your own browser tab.

    The box sits on a real frame

    The page opens the file on your own machine and takes a frame from a little way in, so you are dragging over the actual picture instead of typing four numbers into four boxes and hoping they land where you meant.

    You see the output size before you commit

    H.264 stores colour at half the width and half the height, so a side with an odd number of pixels cannot be encoded. The box rounds down to an even number and shows you the size it will really produce. A file that will not open because of arithmetic nobody showed you is the worst way for this to go wrong.

    No upload, so no size cap

    Sites that crop by upload cap the file because they pay for the transfer and the storage. A 900 MB screen recording is read straight off your disk here and never leaves it.

    The same page on whatever you are using

    The usual answer to this is "install iMovie" or "install this Windows app", which is no answer at all if you are on the other machine. A Mac, a Windows laptop and a phone browser all get the same box and the same file out.

    How to use it

    Choose a video file. Press Start and a frame from it opens below, with a box over the picture.

    Drag inside the frame to draw the box, drag a corner to resize it, or pick a ratio such as 1:1 or 9:16. The size it will produce is written under the frame.

    Press Crop video. An MP4 is re-encoded by the browser's own encoder with nothing to download; other formats fetch a 10 MB engine the first time. Either way the work happens on your own machine and the file comes back as a download.

    Taking a 9:16 box out of the middle of a 16:9 recording is the reason most people come looking for this.

    Cutting the rest of the screen out of a capture

    A screen recording picks up the dock, the tab bar and whatever else was open. The box keeps only the window you meant to record.

    Getting rid of black bars

    When a clip has been exported at the wrong shape the bars are part of the picture, not something a player added. Cropping is the only way to remove them.

    Footage you would rather not hand to a website

    Home video, a recording of a scan, an internal demo before launch — the usual reason people avoid converter sites in the first place.

    Questions

    Is the video uploaded?

    No. The work happens inside this tab: the browser's own encoder for an MP4, or an engine downloaded from this site for other formats. Either way the file is read straight from your disk, and your network tab will show nothing going up.

    Why is cropping so much slower than trimming?

    Trimming can copy the existing frames across untouched. Cropping changes the picture, so every frame has to be decoded, cut down and encoded again. For an MP4 the browser's own encoder does it: a 30-second 1280 × 720 clip took 1.2 seconds on our test machine. Other formats go through the 10 MB engine instead, and the same clip took 19 seconds that way. A 4K clip takes considerably longer either way.

    Why are the width and height always even numbers?

    H.264, the codec in almost every MP4, stores the colour channels at half the width and half the height of the brightness channel. An odd side has no half, so the encoder refuses it. The box rounds each side down to the next even number and shows you that number, so what you read is what you get.

    What kind of file comes back?

    An MP4 with H.264 video, with the index at the front so it starts playing before it has finished downloading. When the source is an MP4 the sound track is copied across untouched, so it loses nothing; the engine path re-encodes it as 160 kbps AAC.

    How large can the file be?

    An MP4 is read a few frames at a time rather than all at once, so there is no 2 GB ceiling on it — we cropped a 2.2 GB, eight-minute 1080p recording here in 26 seconds. Other formats go through the video engine, which does need the whole file at once, and no browser can read more than about 2 GB in one piece; you get a plain message rather than a frozen tab.

    Does this work on an iPhone or on Windows?

    It is a web page, so yes — Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on any of them. The one real difference is memory: a phone has much less of it, so a long 4K clip that goes through on a laptop can run out on a phone. You get a message when that happens.

    Can I close the tab while it works?

    No — the job is the tab, so closing it ends the job. You can switch to another tab and come back; we measured a hidden tab and it ran at the same speed.
