Video to MP3

Reads the video on your own machine and writes out only the sound. Choose an MP3 bitrate, or lift the original audio track out untouched — that second option adds no further loss and finishes in under a second.

Your files

    Nothing chosen yet.

    Where your file goes

Nowhere. This page downloads a small program into your browser, and that program reads the file straight from your disk. The program comes from this site like any image or stylesheet — but your file only ever travels from your disk into your own browser tab.

    Why this one

What you get that the big converters cannot offer.

Or take the audio without re-encoding it

A video already carries a compressed audio track. Copying it out as it is gives you an .m4a with no second round of lossy compression, and it finishes almost instantly.

Length costs you nothing but time

A converter site has to receive the whole video before it can start. A one-hour recording is a long upload and, on most of those sites, over the size cap. Nothing is transferred here.

    You can switch tabs

The conversion runs on in the background. We measured it: the same job took 113 seconds with the tab hidden the whole time and 115 seconds in the foreground.

    You choose the bitrate

128, 192 or 320 kbps, or no re-encoding at all. Free converters usually decide for you, and several of them put their name in the metadata.

    How to use it

    Choose a video file.

Pick an MP3 bitrate, or choose to keep the original track.

Press Start. The first run downloads the engine — after that it starts immediately.

    When people use it

Keeping the audio from a talk

You only need what was said. The audio is a fraction of the size and plays on anything.

Getting a soundtrack onto a music player

Players want audio files, not video containers.

A recording that should not be uploaded

Interviews, consultations and internal meetings are the usual reason people avoid converter sites in the first place.

    Questions

    Is the video uploaded?

No. The engine is downloaded into your browser and runs there, reading the file straight from your disk.

Why is there a download the first time?

The engine is a real video toolchain compiled to run in a browser — about 10 MB compressed. Your browser caches it, so it only happens once.

What does "keep the original track" do?

It copies the audio out of the video without decoding and re-encoding it. Nothing is lost beyond what the video had already lost, and you get an .m4a instead of an .mp3.

How long can the video be?

Keeping the original track reads only the audio out of an MP4, never the whole file, so a recording of several gigabytes goes through. The MP3 settings decode the file first, and a browser cannot read more than about 2 GB in one piece — you get a plain message when that happens instead of a frozen page.

    Can I close the tab?

No — closing the tab ends the job, because the job is the tab. You can switch away to another tab and come back; that does not slow it down.
