Where your file goes
Nowhere. This page downloads a small program into your browser, and that program reads the file straight from your disk. The program comes from this site like any image or stylesheet — but your file only ever travels from your disk into your own browser tab.

What you get that the big converters cannot offer.
It works out the colours from your own footage first
A GIF holds at most 256 colours in a frame. Converting in one step makes the encoder fall back on a fixed palette, and faces, skies and shadows come out blotchy. This page goes over the clip twice: the first pass looks at every frame you asked for and picks the best 256 colours for that particular clip, the second draws the frames using them, scattering the dots that stand in for the colours it cannot keep.
The size is on the screen before you download it
Width, height, how many frames, how long it plays, and how many megabytes — all printed with the result. A 40 MB GIF is one nothing will accept, and that is worth knowing here rather than after the upload bar stops.
You pick the seconds
Start and end, in seconds. Only that stretch is decoded, so cutting it down makes the conversion faster as well as the file smaller. Leave the end at 0 and it runs to the end of the video.
The video is never sent anywhere
The file is read by this page on your own machine and the GIF is assembled there too. No account, no queue, no upload — there is no server here that could receive it.
How to use it

Set the start and end seconds, the frame rate, and the width. The height follows the shape of the source.

A reply that has to move
Three seconds of a bug reproducing itself, or the one moment in a screen recording you want somebody to look at. A GIF plays everywhere, with no player and no click.
Somewhere video will not embed
Issue trackers, wikis, chat tools and mail clients that will happily show an image and quietly refuse a video.
Footage you would rather not hand over
A screen recording with a customer name in it, an internal demo, a clip that is still under embargo. This page has nothing to send it to.
Questions
How do I make a GIF from a video here?
Drop the file in, set the start and end seconds, pick a frame rate and a width, and press Start. Nothing is uploaded, there is no sign-up, no watermark is added and there is no cap on how many you convert. If the result is bigger than you want, change one of the three settings and run it again.
Why is the GIF so much bigger than the video it came from?
GIF dates from 1989 and has no lossy compression and no motion compensation. Every frame is stored as indexed pixels and squeezed with LZW, and that is all. Ten seconds at 480 pixels wide and 12 frames a second usually lands somewhere between 2 and 6 MB; the same ten seconds as MP4 is often under 500 KB. Seconds, frame rate and width each multiply the total, so a minute at full width runs into hundreds of megabytes, and your browser will normally run out of memory before it finishes.
The colours look banded or grainy
Two hundred and fifty-six colours per frame is the ceiling of the format, not a setting. Anything smooth — a sky, a shadow, the noise that video compression leaves behind — cannot be written as it is, so it is dithered: scattered dots of two colours that your eye reads as a third. Flat graphics, slides and screen recordings come out clean. Filmed footage with gradients in it will show the dithering if you look, on every tool, including the ones that do not mention it.
Which frame rate should I use?
GIF stores each frame delay in hundredths of a second, so only some rates come out exactly. 10, 20 and 25 are exact. 12 is written as 8 hundredths and plays at 12.5. 15 is written as 7 and plays at about 14.3. File size is close to linear in frame rate, so halving it roughly halves the bytes, and below about 8 frames a second most motion starts to read as a slideshow.
Does the GIF have sound?
No. The format has no audio track of any kind. Whatever sound is in the source is dropped. If the sound matters, the clip needs to stay a video.
Does it loop?
Yes, forever. The loop block that browsers read is written into every file this page produces, so it repeats on its own with nothing to press.
How long a clip can I convert?
There is no length written into the page — the limit is the machine you are on. The decoded frames and the finished GIF both sit in this tab while it works, so a long clip at a high frame rate and full width is what runs out of memory first. If that happens you get a message saying so and the page stays up; try a shorter stretch, a lower frame rate or a narrower width. The size of the file barely matters, because only the seconds you asked for are read: we took ten seconds out of a 2.2 GB recording here in 1.7 seconds. That only holds for MP4 — other formats go through the video engine, which cannot read past about 2 GB in one piece.
Is the video really not uploaded?
It is not. The file is read inside this tab and the GIF is built inside this tab — by the browser's own decoder for an MP4, or by an engine downloaded from this site for other formats. You can watch the network panel while it works.
